About the Department:
Department of Zoology, Dr. S. R. K. Govt. College, Yanam was incepted in 1980 with little facilities and four staff members. This was the first science course introduced in the college. With in the span of 28 years, the department has produced many zoology degree holders who are working at various levels in Government and private sectors. The Department makes sincere efforts for indulging innovations in teaching and learning. UGC and the government of Pondicherry improving the facilities in the department every year with the aid of funds allotted in order to improve teaching and learning process. The Head of the Department and staff members take individual care on every student so as to improve curricular and co-curricular activities. Faculty of this Department was recruited through Union Public Service Commission. They are known for their academic excellence clubbed with teaching experience and devotion to duties. The sole aim of the department is to keep up the reputation of the institution with ever improving results and ranks. Keeping in view of the national interests, faculty members of the department are encouraging the students to take up small scale industries. Certain papers were recently introduced in the curriculum as part of CBCS such as aquatic biology, vermitechnology, ornamental fish culture, etc. which help them to emerge as entrepreneurs.

- To extract innovative thoughts from students. Faculty is encouraging them to share their ideas and thoughts.
- Faculty are extending their knowledge and services to other institutions and departments.
- Students encouraged to interact with school children to generate awareness on personal hygiene for better society.

Facilities in the Department:
Department is well equipped with instruments and equipments for both research and academic purpose such as Flow hood, Gel electrophoresis, thin layer chromatography, Colorimeter, Research binocular microscope, Trinocular Research Microscope with digital camera, Homogenizer, Incubator, Spectrophotometer, Micropipette, pH meter, Salinometer, Water bath, Deep Freezer, Blood analyser and Ultra Refrigerated Centrifuge.
Innovative Processes adopted by the Department in Teaching and Learning:
Faculty Members of the Department are using innovative teaching methods wherever necessary in addition to the regular classroom teaching.
- Power Point Presentations
- Video Lectures
- Computer aided learning: - During project works / assignments / Subject updating programmes, students are being motivated to involve in participatory learning by utilizing Computer with internet provided for them.
- Brainstorming sessions – includes awareness on recent technologies and scientific advancements in various sectors of biology and natural sciences.
- Important (International/national) days related to science and other areas of science are being celebrated in our department in which students are enlightened regarding the significant contributions to science.
- We are maintaining a BLOG in which students can get the information and resource materials like previous papers, model papers, syllabus, and study materials for their academic excellence.?

- Faculty of the Department are actively involved in social activities by participating in the events of other organizations as speaker’s judges on different occasions.
- Faculty of the Department is actively involving in various events as resource persons.
- Department is organizing seminars and conferences by inviting eminent persons from different fields.
- Students are allowed to browse internet in the department to gather extra information and prepare for B.Sc. Examinations and various competitive exams. 6 out of 13 Students (from 2018 batch) of our Zoology Department secured top ranks in M.Sc. Entrance examination (Pondicherry University) and pursuing M.Sc.

Future Plans:
- To develop a full, fledge Laboratory for P.G. Zoology
- To introduce need-based Practicals that can boost employment opportunities and the self-employment of students.
- To start a short-term Career Oriented Certificate course of DMLT.
- To set up guidance cell for those aspirants who are preparing for NET/SET exams and other Competitive Exams.
- Increase Greenery in and around our college and in Yanam region
- Conservation of Bird habitat specially sparrows by providing Nests and Feed.
- Involve students in awareness programs on health and hygiene as social responsibility.
- To organize National and state level Seminars and Conferences
- To Apply for Multidisciplinary Research project in collaboration with another Institutions/Department.
