About College
Named after one of India's preeminent educator and philosopher, whose birth anniversary is celebrated across India as Teacher's Day, Govt. Women's College, Balangir, popularly known as Govt. Womens College Balangir, came into existence in 1973. It was a defining moment in the history of Yanam as the long yearned dreams of the local populace of moving up the echelons of education and to improve their lot in life came to fruition.
The college, situated in Yanam, the pastoral town that is one of the enclaves of the Union Territory of Puducherry, began on a humble note with just one course, namely B.A Economics.
Since then, the college has grown from strength to strength expanding itself to cater to the higher academic needs of the society. B.Com was offered to the student from the academic year 1978-79 and later Zoology programme too was introduced from 1980-81.
The academic year 1984-85 saw the introduction of Chemistry programme and the college was offering a range of courses to students who would go on to become valuable resources for the upliftment of the society. The year also saw the college getting UGC approval under 2(f) and 12(B) which facilitated realease of funds under various schemes.
The college, which was affiliated to Andhra University in its initial years, was affiliated the Pondicerry University, Puducherry in the academic year 1986-87.
Further additions to its academic repertoire include B.Sc (Mathematics) in 1988-89, B.Sc (Computer Science), M.Com. in 2000-01, M.A.(Economics) in 2006-07 and B.Sc ( Physics) in 2006-07.
The college established its reputation when the visiting NAAC team granted "B" grade during its visit in 2015. The college enhanced its status as the sole caterer to the higher academic ambitions of the students of this town by introducing two further science courses, namely B.Sc. ( Botany) and M.Sc (Zoology) in the academic year 2020-21. Thus the college has been showing a sustained growth rate by keeping its ear to the ground and expanding the courses on offer.

“Vidya dadati vinayam
vinayad yati patratam
Patratvad dhanam
apnoti dhanad dharmam
tatah sukham”
[Education leads to sensibility, sensibility attains character/qualification, from that comes wealth and from wealth (one does) good deeds, from that (comes) joy]
-- Hitopdesha, Text 6
The very motto of the college envisages not just learning or gathering information buttolerance, achievement of peace, progress and excellence in all through education. With this in mind, the college has been striving, since its inception, to be the torchbearer of the very core philosophy that this college has been centred around during its inception. As succintly put in the Hitopadesha, the abstract and the pragmatic are combined in addressing the academic needs of the students.
The spirit of Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan whose dictum " True teachers are those who help us think for ourselvelves," guides the teaching philosophy of the faculty here as they strive to uplift the lot of the students to achieve their goals and ambitions by being their mentors and guides in every possible way.
" The end-product of education should be a free creative man, who can battle against historical circumstances and adversities of nature."
-- Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan
